While we completely freak over the news that Alien Crush Returns will be coming Stateside soon, take a brief second to remember Karaoke Joysound Wii. A few months ago, Hudson’s Mike Pepe stated that two games from Alien Crush Returns, My Aquarium, and Karaoke Joysound Wii would be localized. With the first two now confirmed for North America, that means (as expected) that the karaoke game will be staying in Japan.

The silver lining: if you’re feeling adventurous and refuse to let such obstacles prevent you from warbling to J-pop, you can always get your import on — Hudson just gave the game a release date of December 11th in its homeland.

Mega Man 9 in Europe this year, too

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

For Europeans, they’re usually left to wait a really long time before getting a game that has already released in other regions. With WiiWare, however, the story has been different. They got Dr. Mario Rx before North America did, and most of the other high profile titles have released there in relatively short time periods after the North American release. Now, another high profile title will see release in the same timeframe: Mega Man 9.

Word of this comes from Wiiz, who says Capcom has announced the title for “fall 2008″ in Europe. We’re willing to believe it, mostly because we want Chris to share in the joy we’ll undoubtedly be feeling over in North America.

Smash Bros. champion cracks the world of reality TV

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

Fans of reality TV show Survivor who also read Nintendo blogs will be pleased to hear that gamers are getting some representation for the show’s seventeenth season, Survivor: Gabon - Earth’s Last Eden.

22-year-old Ken Hoang will be one of the eighteen contestants when the series begins on September 25th, and he’s there for one very good reason: he can totally kick the world’s ass at Super Smash Bros. Melee. Yeah, even yours. A professional gamer by trade, Ken has earned over $50,000 from playing Melee, which (according to his Survivor profile at CBS) he’s used to help pay his family’s mortgage. Whaddaguy!

The message to take from this: don’t let anybody tell you gaming can’t take you anywhere in life. Unless you play, say, Mario Kart Wii as well as we do. Then, seriously, it’s time to look for a real job.

Sony on Wii: ‘It’s not hurting us’

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

Filed under:

That Howard Stringer is a rascal, isn’t he? The Sony CEO recently spoke to German publication Die Welt about the various pies Sony currently has its fingers in, and clearly wanted to shatter a few myths regarding videogames and the current console race.

First of all, the Wii isn’t more fun than the PS3, no — it’s just different. PlayStation 3 titles are “designed for those who play a lot.” And anyway, it could have been oh-so-different for Sony, as Stringer reckons his company was first to discover the new gamers who have flocked to the Wii. “For a while, we held the same target group with the SingStar karaoke game,” opined our man in the know. “But perhaps we neglected to pursue that avenue.”

Stringer then confesses that Nintendo may have hit upon a superior business model by selling more consoles and making more money on hardware, before weakly claiming, “the Wii is not succeeding at our expense — it is not hurting us.” For a console that’s not hurting Sony, Howard sure likes to talk about the Wii a lot. But it’s definitely not hurting them.

Malice, snide remarks, and backstabbing in a bid to reach the top. No, not another day in Wii Fanboy HQ, but the constant snipes between grown-up gaming CEOs happy to dismiss the Wii as a novelty, or pretend they never really wanted those customers anyway.

Rock Band 2 getting full albums from several bands

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

Filed under:

For all of you Rock Band enthusiasts out there, some news has traveled down the pipe courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, confirming several new albums for download in the game. We’re not going to waste any time leading up to the juicy info, so catch it below:

  • Foo Fighters — “The Colour and the Shape”
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers — “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”
  • Jane’s Addiction — “Nothing’s Shocking”
  • Megadeth — “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying”
  • Stevie Ray Vaughn — “Texas Flood”

Of course, we’re still not 100% certain that the Wii version of the game will support all of the features the other console versions will. Regardless, we’re very much Megadeth fans, so seeing them get their work featured in the game is great (and it’s one of their best albums, at that). After the break, we’ve embedded our favorite track from that album, so jump past and enjoy.

Rock Band 2 vs. Guitar Hero: World Tour. For other systems, it’s an arms race for the most features. For us, it’s a battle to remove the fewest. For Australian Wii owners, the winner will be the game that actually gets released!

Virtually Overlooked: Mario Artist

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

Filed under:

The Mario Artist series is a set of three games (Paint Studio, Polygon Studio, and Talent Studio) that allow players to create artwork in varying forms. In addition to being pretty neat on their own, they predicted some of Nintendo’s biggest developments before they became big. Looking through this suite of three games, we can see a few quite novel ideas that were later refined into massively important releases in other forms — not the least of which, of course, is the “non-game.”

Unfortunately, the one part of Nintendo’s strategy that these three titles failed to accurately predict was the releasing games on the 64DD part, which Nintendo did not end up adopting as a business model.
The Famicom Disk System was a fairly popular mode of playing and storing games, but the 64DD didn’t fare as well. The FDS had the advantage of being attached to a system people owned and liked, while the Nintendo 64 saw nowhere near the Famicom’s success (to say the least). Nintendo of America declined to support or release the peripheral right away, effectively dooming the already-shaky device. And to make things worse, Nintendo of Japan only made it available with a subscription to their RANDNet online service, making its commercial failure a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Mario Artist series, then, was destined for obscurity regardless of quality.

Paint Studio is like the lost sequel to Mario Paint: a drawing program, bundled with a mouse, that featured several Nintendo-themed stamps, including Rare’s N64 characters and all 151 Red/Blue-era Pokémon. It interfaced with a wacky peripheral called the Nintendo 64 Capture Cartridge (included with Talent Studio), a cartridge with connections for composite video input that allowed images to be imported from video.

Polygon Studio enables players to create simple 3D models, which could then be imported into Paint Studio or sent to a printing service via Randnet. You can use images from Paint Studio as textures for the models, as well. These polygon models can also be used in customizable games.

Talent Studio is a ‘game’ in which players can map their own faces (captured from video with the Capture Cartridge) onto characters with customizable body shapes and clothing. These characters can then be put into ‘fashion shows’ or short animated movies made within Talent Studio.

While we’re still (oddly) waiting for Nintendo’s latest drawing tool on either the DS or Wii, the ideas found in the other games have resurfaced in interesting places. The idea of making in-game caricatures of yourself, of course, would become very important to Nintendo a bit later (two console generations later) when the company hit upon the idea of making it part of the system rather than a standalone game, and using your DIY avatars in other games. The printing-service idea has recently been brought back for photobooks and business cards via the Wii in Japan. And outside of its main features, Polygon Studio made its own contribution to Nintendo’s future, with the minigames seen in the following video. See if anything looks familiar.

Dyack: Ownership of Eternal Darkness IP is ‘complicated’

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

Filed under:

Our greener, slightly more hi-def colleagues at X3F recently had a chance to sit down with Denis Dyack, famously outspoken founder and president of Silicon Knights. Although Dyack and Silicon Knights have been working with the others in recent years, the company does have a history of working alongside Nintendo, perhaps most notably when Ninty published cult favorite Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem on the GameCube. Since it was released in 2002, the fan clamor for an Eternal Darkness follow-up has been considerable.

Regrettably, the signs given by Dyack here (at around the 4.30 mark) aren’t encouraging. The sticking point seems to be the issue of who owns the Eternal Darkness IP, something which Dyack describes as “a complicated question with a complicated answer.”

That said, he also reveals that Nintendo is a “silent partner” with the developer, and that the two companies have a “great” relationship. “It’s not time to talk about Eternal Darkness 2,” he concludes. The chances of an Eternal Darkness sequel on Wii seem a little slimmer after watching this, and that makes us sad pandas.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom? Don’t expect it in the U.S.

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

Remember that rumor we posted regarding Tatsunoko vs Capcom? Well, Capcom is saying that the title might not be destined for the United States (does this imply all of North America?). In fact, the possibility of the arcade game coming over here is situated somewhere between slim and none.

Of course, this doesn’t answer questions regarding the Wii port of the title. If the game does get ported to Wii, and released in Japan, homebrew aficionados will have little problem enjoying it on their console. For the rest of us that want a localized version, however, we should probably stop holding our breath.

Guitar Hero gets branded up

Posted by admin On August - 28 - 2008

Filed under:

Activision has announced a whole slew of brands will be supporting the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour, from amps right on down to guitar strings. It’s nothing new to us, considering the company did the same thing for previous Guitar Hero games, but the list for World Tour is kind of massive. It goes:

  • Ampeg
  • Audio-Technica
  • EMG Pickups
  • Ernie Ball
  • Evans Drumheads
  • Guitar Center
  • Krank Amplification
  • Mackie
  • Marshall
  • Orange County Drum & Percussion
  • Pork Pie Percussion
  • Regal Tip
  • Sabian cymbals
  • Vox
  • Zildjian drumsticks

Of course, with Rock Band tapping Fender for their guitar needs, and Gibson suing everyone on the planet, we wonder why Activision hasn’t found another suitable Guitar manufacturer to feature in their game. May we suggest Ibanez? They make some nice guitars!
